Short reviews

  1. God Help the Girl

A pretty, frothy pop musical that’s as bland & gutless as the music. Something to forget once you’ve finished watching.

  2. Patema Inverted

Loved this anime about two societies with opposing gravity. Kept me guessing, and a little dizzy, throughout. Great stuff.

  3. Kill Your Darlings

An enjoyable, energetic dramatisation of Allen Ginsberg’s college years. Good cast, and Daniel Radcliffe not terrible.

  4. The Norte End of History

Four hours long. I don’t know how to form an opinion on it. I did get some good 3DS gaming in though.

  5. The Keeper of Lost Causes

By-the-numbers Scandinavian noir that might have been interesting ten years ago. Not much more than a TV pilot.

  6. Metropolis

I’m…glad it exists. But I find it pretty dull and overbearing, and I have slight guilt about that.

  7. Big Night

Best omelette scene in film history.

  8. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

Offensive only in how boring it is.

  9. The Fall

What could be dismissed as scenery porn is elevated by amazing performances by Lee Pace and his 10 year old co-star.

  10. The Hudsucker Proxy

    Screenplay as poetry, sure sure.

  11. Birdman

Exhilarating, witty, fantastic performances and a great score. Loved it.

  12. Big Eyes

Worth seeing just because it’s a Tim Burton film that stars neither Depp nor Bonham-Carter.

  13. The Poseidon Adventure

Absurdly masculine film, mostly Gene Hackman shouting down everyone. Those that drowned maybe had the better deal.

  14. Went the Day Well

‘Village vs Nazis’ classic that gets Thora Hird into the Internet Movie Firearms Database.

  15. Dial ‘M’ For Murder

A bit like Hitchcock doing an episode of Columbo. Bonus points for stylish moustache-grooming at the end.

  16. A Night to Remember

1958 Titanic film that’s more engaging than Cameron’s film as you’re not rooting for the sea to claim Leonardo DiCaprio

  17. L.A. Confidential

It’s perfect. A great adaptation, great performances, a complex story and an amazing score. I love it to pieces.

  18. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

My favourite of the Indiana films. Connery/Ford pairing works so well it’s a shame it was never repeated.

  19. Mary Poppins

A string of vaguely-related song and dance routines with practically no story, and the dad loses his job at the end. Bleh.

  20. Pinocchio

As charming and beautiful now as it was then though the Blue Fairy’s a bit of a deus ex machina.
