Short reviews

  1. Time of the Wolf

A turgid post-apocalyptic drama in which survivors gather together to shriek uselessly at each other. Dull and irritating.

  2. The Duke of Burgundy

A fascinating, attractive oddity. Left me slightly baffled but content.

  3. The Astronaut Farmer

One of those inoffensive, tepid, banal non-entity films that fill out the weekday afternoon Channel 5 schedules.

  4. Belle

Finely crafted but a little placid.

  5. The Boxtrolls

Heart-meltingly attractive stop-motion animation. The film itself is a bit weak in comparison, but enjoyable enough.

  6. Last Tango in Paris

Utterly ridiculous from start to finish.

  7. In A Lonely Place

Solid ‘50s crime drama, though the idea of an instantly-recognised, celebrity screenwriter feels a bit far-fetched now.

  8. The Last Temptation of Christ

Not sure how to judge it. Did what it set out to do, I guess? William Dafoe gives good Christ, at least.

  9. The Machine

    A dreadfully-serious and mostly-forgettable sci-fi flick. Serviceable at best.

  10. The Warriors

    A stone-cold classic.

  11. There Will Be Blood

    Perfect in every way.

  12. Beyond

Appalling low-budget sci-fi drama that seems to think a dull, arguing couple is more interesting than an apocalypse. Dreadful stuff.

  13. Emperor

A solidly-crafted, utterly-tepid look at the end of WW2 in Japan. What could’ve been an intriguing political drama just fizzled out

  14. Lucy

    Brain poison.

  15. Metropolis (2001)

Fantastic anime with a dense visual style that felt like Ralph Bakshi drawing Astro Boy.

  16. Highlander

A nicely trashy, lurid ‘80s flick. Shame about the sequels & spin-offs. THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ONLY ONE.

  17. The Dark Knight

Heath Ledger never stops being brilliant and the film looks and sounds great, but the plot feels dumber every time I see it.

  18. Batman Begins

The best of the Nolan series; not as showy as the sequels, but solid.

  19. The Importance of Being Earnest

Perfectly enjoyable Wilde adaptation with Colin Firth being particularly Firthy.

  20. Trance

Surprisingly good! Has some weird hang-ups about female sexuality but that aside, a decent psychological thriller.
