Short reviews

  1. Flawless

Nicely-formed ‘60s heist film with Demi Moore & Michael Caine doing solid work. Closing reveal is dubious but forgivable.

  2. eXistenZ

Not the best Cronenberg, but still Cronenbergian enough to be enjoyable. Late ‘90s view of futuristic VR is terribly quaint.

  3. The Lord of the Rings

Entire extended trilogy. Bit of a masterpiece, I think, which is why it’s such a shame they never adapted The Hobbit.

  4. Prince Caspian

An agreeably solid fantasy adaptation with weighty action beats. Surprisingly dark for a kids film as well.

  5. Oz, the Great and Powerful

Heartbreaking to see occasional Raimi flourishes under dead performances, odd gender politics & a weak script.

  6. Toy Story 1, 2 & 3

Not considering them separately as they’re so perfect as a whole. So ludicrously engaging & well made they make me sick

  7. I Confess

Great Hitchcock thriller concerning a priest accused of murder. Made me hanker for a Father Dowling Investigates reboot though.

  8. Nemesis

Some shitty B-movie that I always wanted to see as a teenager but never did. I have nothing but regret for spending time on it now.

  9. Stromboli

In which Ingrid Bergman is so bored by village life she risks walking across an active volcano to escape. I sympathise entirely.

  10. Legend

Tom Hardy’s performances are a lot of fun. An oddly-forgiving portrayal of both Krays though.

  11. The Devil’s Advocate

Feels like the story would make a better TV series with more room to breathe; still should’ve ended 10 minutes earlier

  12. The Salvation

A rather by-the-numbers Western revenge flick but with Eva Green, Mads Mikkelsen and Jonathan Pryce, it feels pretty classy.

  13. Starring Adam West

A short, sweet documentary on Adam West getting a Hollywood Walk of Fame star. Nice.

  14. A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night

Visually stunning, but completely forgettable. There’s no substance here at all.

  15. Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life

A dreadful, laugh-free slog, where punchlines are delivered then hammered home for another 20 minutes.

  16. The Guest

Excellent stuff, a bit like if John Carpenter directed Drive.

  17. Clouds of Sils Maria

Just superb. Great performances from Kristen Stewart and Juliette Binoche and a deep, lightly surreal story.

  18. Castle in the Sky

I love these earlier Ghibli films, though whenever I watch this one I’m left wishing it was a TV series instead.

  19. The Man Who Knew Too Much

A soporific Hitchcock thriller with James Stewart acting like he was doing a parody of James Stewart.

  20. Event Horizon

A typical study in mediocrity from Paul W.S. Anderson. So predictably boring I may as well have not watched it at all.
