Short reviews

  1. Mr. Holmes

Beautifully presented & performed. Loved McKellan as ageing Holmes & nerded out at Nicholas "Young Sherlock Holmes" Rowe’s cameo.

  2. Mimic (director’s cut)

Better than the theatrical cut, but still less enjoyable than del Toro’s commentary where he rips apart his own film.

  3. The New Girlfriend

French cross-dressing piece that’s enjoyable enough but never sure if it’s going for high camp or serious drama.

  4. Re-Animator

Funny and gory and delightfully ludicrous, but also left me wondering why the fantastic Jeffrey Combs isn’t in more film & TV.

  5. The Omen

    Just…never have kids.

  6. An American Werewolf in London

The canonical werewolf film, with never-bettered special effects & maybe film’s most abrupt, perfect ending.

  7. Little Shop of Horrors

I must have seen it a hundred times & know all the words, but I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of this. It’s a joy.

  8. Moomins On the Riviera

    Lovely, and completely unpretentious.

  9. John Wick

Just fantastic. Sharp script, balletic action sequences, enjoyable cameos and some intriguing world building.

  10. When Marnie Was There

If this is the last Ghibli film, they’re going out on a great piece. Charming and slightly spooky.

  11. Blind

Thoughtful, delicate Norwegian piece detailing a newly-blind woman’s attempts to retain her ability to visualise things. Recommended.

  12. Beneath the Planet of the Apes

Pointless sequel with such an hilariously depressing ending I can’t help but love the whole thing.

  13. Miami Blues

A fun, underrated ‘90s crime drama in which Alec Baldwin gives good ‘90s Alec Baldwin. Seedy, pulpy, enjoyable stuff.

  14. The Matrix Reloaded & Revolutions

Not really as terrible as I remembered. Not great, certainly. Barely register as ‘good’ in fact. Tolerable.

  15. Whisper of the Heart

A lovely, underrated Ghibli, similar in tone to Only Yesterday and Ocean Waves. Charmingly awkward.

  16. Tropic Thunder Director’s Cut

Much as I love the film, this is another director’s cut that adds little but extended punchlines. Unnecessary.

  17. World War Z

Such a wasted opportunity, a great, inventive novel reduced to a series of banal, cliched zombie film moments. Pitiful.

  18. Justice League: The New Frontier

An animated example of how introducing all your heroes in one film ends up feeling muddled and crowded.

  19. Blackhat

Just depressingly inept, dull and morose from start to finish. Felt embarrassed for everyone involved.

  20. The Loveless

Forgettable biker flick notable only for being Kathryn Bigelow/Willem Dafoe’s debut. Only watch for curiosity.
