Short reviews

  1. Journey to Italy

A reverse Roman Holiday as a couple go on an Italian holiday together and discover they hate each other. A masterpiece.

  2. The Long Good Friday

Absolutely perfect. Harold Shand is the quintessential confident man completely out of his depth.

  3. Shivers

Cronenberg’s first film is cheap but brilliant. Disturbing, comical, grotesque.

  4. Silverado

A strong cast can’t help this 80s Western feel like a 50s throwback. Nothing specifically bad about it, but it’s been surpassed.

  5. Meek’s Cutoff

A bleak and haunting minimalist Western that’s just on the edge of oppressive. Pretty much flawless.

  6. Detention

Actually the best horror sci-fi comedy romance teen-drama 90s homage you’ll ever see.

  7. Charlie’s Angels

I un-ironically love it. Great villains, great soundtrack, fun fights, solid action, and Tim Curry. What’s not to like?

  8. Jamaica Inn

Might not be classic Hitchcock but it’s a great restoration and Charles Laughton is at his Laughtoniest. Worth a Sunday watch.

  9. Hellraiser: Hellworld

An implausibly-decent cast can’t save what’s fundamentally a mediocre teen slasher film with a Pinhead cameo.

  10. Ghost in the Shell (2017)

A dull, perfunctory remake that does nothing and says nothing new.

  11. Train to Busan

Remarkably solid Korean zombie flick. Claustrophobic, darkly comic, and train staff with a real sense of professionalism.

  12. Idle Hands

A ‘90s stoner horror comedy that’s scare-free and laugh-free. Might have some nostalgia value if you were a ‘90s stoner.

  13. La Femme Nikita

Wonderful in that 90s-hair, neon-lit, circular glasses, French way.

  14. Being John Malkovich

I want to say it’s brilliant, but there’s something of the diminishing return about it. Maybe just one to watch once.

  15. Source Code

Fun, exhilarating and deeply satisfying, even if the ending always feels a little bit of a cop-out to me.

  16. Hellraiser: Deader

Marginally better than the previous couple of Hellraisers but still mostly worthless. I’m pity-watching at this point.

  17. The Love Witch

A great example of the genre and style it’s throwing back to, I guess? Bored me senseless though.

  18. American Beauty

Great film with great performances from all. Much more going on here than just the rose petal fantasies everyone remembers.

  19. Hellraiser: Hellseeker

Another mediocre supernatural horror with Pinhead hastily patched into it. So forgettable I almost feel sorry for it.

  20. Burying the Ex

A weak zombie comedy made retroactively notable by starring sadly-missed Anton Yelchin. Watchable, with low expectations.
