Short reviews

  1. Ghostbusters (2016)

Extended cut isn’t going to convince anyone who didn’t like the theatrical, but it’s nice to see all the extra dancing.

  2. Blade II

Really impossible to fault. Great action, great characters, great script, it’s probably Luke Goss’s second best film.

  3. Tucker and Dale vs Evil

Genuinely laugh out loud funny, and I say that as someone who very rarely laughs at all, even internally.

  4. Emperor of the North

Like a submarine drama except it’s two middle aged men instead of submarines and a train instead of the sea. A classic.

  5. The Boy and the Beast

I loved this to begin with but it rambled and drifted and lost me. Check it out if you have a longer attention span.

  6. Tomato Red

A country noir so forgettable there were moments I actually forgot I was watching it.

  7. Addams Family Reunion

While it’s interesting to see Tim Curry as Gomez, the film itself is a piece of staggering awfulness, to be avoided.

  8. Critters

Never more than a throwaway bit of gory stupid fun, but that’s all it needs to be. Always nice to see M. Emmet Walsh as well.

  9. The Transfiguration

Heart-warming teenage relationship drama and one of the the nastiest, bleakest horror films I’ve ever seen. Incredible.

  10. Brute Force

A grim, violent crime noir that feels as hard-hitting and hopeless today as it must have done on release. Enjoyably nihilistic.

  11. Havana

A lavishly-produced romantic drama set during the Cuban revolution. Lacks both romance and drama.

  12. Presumed Innocent

A ponderous courtroom drama that plods when it needs to spark. Even a cigar-chomping Raul Julia feels muted and bored.

  13. Logan Lucky

Loved this. Charming, fun characters, witty script and complex storytelling. Sadly though, also features Seth MacFarlane.

  14. Bad Girls

Average 90s Western, more interesting for how it could have been than how it turned out. Further reading

  15. These Final Hours

Decent little apocalypse drama. Nothing groundbreaking but a solid script and strong character work from all involved.

  16. Virtuosity

A daft 90s sci-fi thriller that’s still worth a watch for a young Russell Crowe having the absolute time of his life.

  17. Pulp Fiction

Aside from a $5 milkshake now sounding normal, this film really hasn’t aged at all. As smart, funny, and gripping as ever.

  18. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

Exhilarating and complex early film by Miyazaki that nails the Studio Ghibli template straight off.

  19. Waking Life

Amazing how much more gripping and interesting cod-philosophical concepts are when they’re presented through rotoscope.

  20. Personal Shopper

Dreary supernatural thriller that squanders tension in a soporific second act seen almost entirely through text messages. Dull stuff.
