Kilroy

,

Robert Kilroy-Silk was elected as an MEP in the East Midlands as his UK Independence Party looked on course for third place in the European polls.

BBC news article

I weep for the future. Kilroy, for crying out loud. As if he wasn’t annoying enough leering over menopausal women at 9am every morning, now he’s going to end up as some sort of terrifying perma-tanned dictator of England in a few years from now.

What an awful man. I was quite pleased to see Ken re-elected, and the Iraq backlash evident in the local elections was heartening (I was rather hoping we’d get Broon as leader) but this latest expression of popular opinion just makes me lose faith in democracy, really. Kilroy is an oaf and his party a joke.

Speaking of loathsome politicians, I notice that Geoff Hoon is in Basra – perhaps some insurgents could arrange to give him a special Iraqi welcome?

The Iraq backlash was good, but it might have been better if people had voted for an anti-war party such as the LibDems instead of just voting *against* Labour with a Conservative vote. After all, the Conservatives were even more pro-war than Labour, I seem to recall.

I’m not that surprised they voted Tory. Watching yer average Briton given the responsibility of a vote is rather like watching a toddler with an AK47. As for the Lib Dems, I’ve no idea – I guess people are just incapable of seeing the UK as having three-party politics, although the media does little to help either.

I wonder how many people voted UKIP in the East Midlands just because Kilroy was standing, and they liked his abusive breakfast show…

I think that is a very pertinent comment. For me, a distinctive sign of the times is the way the cult of the personality has come to dominate all strands of the media. This has led to mediocre “celebrities” becoming political leaders and mediocre politicians trying to become television presenters. Of course, Kilroy has now gone full circle.
